You need Gems to open gem gates and get access to other parts of the Islands. You can harvest gems on your island as all players own a specific gem tree. Add neighbors and you can visit their Gem Tree once a day to grab a gem. Each person is assigned a random gem tree so try to have a neighbor with each color gem tree.
Each person has the option to send their gem color as a free gift each day as well as one other gem color.
